a few of my favorite things

I know, I know… it has been over a week since my last post. I’ve been working hard on another website and was trying to not get distracted while doing that. And well, general life has happened which means lots of sleepless nights and the normal stuff. ha!

This weather has me down too… we had such a gloriously beautiful weekend two weekends ago and since then it has been DREARY winter weather and that just does nothing for the ol’ seasonal depression.

This past weekend we went to a birthday party for Rory and Ryder’s little friend, Addison. Both girls are still singing happy birthday to her and talking about her bunny. It is so cute! Ryder especially loves Addison- they are the same size and have similar personalities so Ryder is just drawn to her I guess. It is so cute seeing her at an age where she remembers her friends and talks about them.

After the party we went to an Easter egg hunt which is always big fun for the girls! They both had a blast. Unfortunately my blog isn’t letting me upload any pictures so I will have to share those whenever I get that fixed.

So since I can’t upload any pictures I thought I’d share some things that I’m really loving right now.

1) Love & Family by William and Glenna Marshall. My friend, Glenna, and her husband recorded an album that shares their story through marriage, faith, infertility, and the joy of their son that they adopted. It is such a beautiful album and I hope you click the link and listen to it and BUY IT. All proceeds are helping to fund their upcoming Ethiopian adoption.

In fact… I think I will give a CD away to y’all! 🙂 All you have to do is head over to the bandcamp page they have set up, listen to the album and come back and tell me which song is your favorite on this post! I will pick a winner on Friday!

2) I LOVE deal of the day sites. I have no idea, but they thrill me to no end. Well, my new favorite site like this is Pick Your Plum. I am officially obsessed. I want to buy some of the wooden tags on there today but not sure when I would use them. But maybe I need them just in case….

3) I have found myself in a time of life where reading a book is nearly impossible. The only time I can read is at night but by then I’m so dog tired I can’t get past a single page without falling asleep. So, I just have been reading blogs mostly. One of my favorite post is this one- To the parents of small children: Let me be the one that says it out loud.

Hopefully I will have my picture uploading thingamajig fixed soon!

Don’t forget to comment on this blog post to enter to win a copy of Love & Family by William and Glenna Marshall!

Happy Wednesday!

the winner.

Obviously this is late because, hello, its how I do everything…

but we have a winner of the 585 Boutique giveaway! I used random.org and it generated comment #4.

Kayla C!

Kayla, you will get an email from Sarah soon!

Today we had a birthday party for Ryder and had so much fun. I will do the post on that Monday. Its been an awesome day and we are pooped!

Tonight was date night at our church and we ALWAYS take advantage of it. I’m going to miss our church so much!

This past Monday we did one last photo shoot with our amazing photographer/friend here in town, Jennifer. She never ceases to amaze me. I just had to try and fit in a family picture before we left Paris. We decided to do it at the infamous Eiffel Tower here with the giant cowboy hat.

When she posted the picture I completely lost it. I feel the weight of the move with this picture and the weight of so much we are losing very soon. To some people, we will be forever frozen just like that- two small little girls and us in our late 20s. For some reason it just totally gripped me and I sobbed for a good hour.

Yes, I absolutely realize we are gaining so much with this move closer to our family, but we are also leaving family behind. And right now while we are still here waiting for move day, I’m just plain sad. It will get easier and better especially once we are there, but right now is hard. So I’m spending as much time with friends and now with Andy since he’s “unemployed” for a few weeks and enjoying every second we have left here.

Hope y’all are having a great weekend!

blankies.

Most of you know that our little family (minus Andy) has a love for blankies.

I’m not going to lie- I had a blankie that I slept with until I got married. And I was for real depressed I had to give it up. I’m also not going to lie and say I threw it away. Anytime Andy is out of town blankie comes down out of his special place in the closet and sleeps with me. HAHA!

Anyways.

It seems as though my dear girls have adopted my blankie love. Rory has one and Ryder has one and they are in love with them and its stressful to think I could lose it or ruin it. Especially Ryder’s because hers was hand made by someone for the heart unit children and it is OH SO SPECIAL to us.

Well a friend of mine, Sarah, sent me a blanket for Ryder and y’all, it is DIVINE.

The blanket is so soft and warm, but thin so not too hot. And she crochets the edges and gives it just the right touch to make it extra special. I am IN LOVE. I want one for myself!

And even better- my girls FREAKED OUT when I showed them. They were playing tug of war and fighting over who was going to get it. I actually had to take it away and make them take turns. That is love, y’all.

I’m going to be honest and say that I was a little worried they’d reject it because they are SO IN LOVE with their own blankies. When you have a blankie you are picky when it comes to these things… believe me, I know! ha! But these girls can’t get enough of it!

And as you can see, its truly the perfect size. Its thin like a receiving blanket but so much bigger which is perfect!

So, I say all of this because….

We are giving one away!

I asked Sarah to tell a little about herself and her new boutique called the 585 boutique:

I come from a very crafty and talented family – crocheting, painting, basket making. Luckily, I inherited some of that craftiness! The idea for these blankets came when I was pregnant with my daughter and realized that I didn’t really like any store-bought receiving blankets. They were just way too small and not very cute at all. My mom started making the edged blankets for my daughter. They were wonderfully huge and absolutely beautiful! I saw them and knew I could make them too! I picked up the hobby and have been making them since then!

These blankets are seriously the best receiving blankets you’ll find! They are so super soft and come in such cute designs! Best of all, they are completely customizable – size, color of edging, and look of edging. The standard size is approximately 36×42 inches and the blankets will get softer each time you wash them. They are great for swaddling infants, and are awesome snuggle blankets when your child gets older. I’ve found that they make incredible baby shower gifts because they are wonderfully unique. You can have something handmade without it being the “heirloom” quality that you don’t want to use for fear of ruining it.

In addition to these blankets, I make a variety of other items for little ones – flannel “rag style” burp cloths – which can be made to match a receiving blanket, crocheted hats and scarves, and occasionally a baby afghan. I will also be launching the applique and monogram side of my business by the end of the month. I am always up for custom orders!

OK! LET’S GET TO THE GIVEAWAY ALREADY!

Here’s how it works:

Go to the 585 boutique facebook page and “like” it. Then come back here and leave a comment telling me you did.

For a second chance to win, go to the facebook page and tell her what your favorite blanket is and then come back here and leave a comment telling me your favorite print as well!

If you have any questions, please let me know! The giveaway will end this Friday (6/15 at 5:00pm). I will select a winner by a random number generator and announce the winner Friday night!

Happy Giveaway!

PS: Sarah is also doing a giveaway on her Facebook page when she gets 150 likes! So you REALLY have THREE chances to win! WOOT!

UPrinting Giveaway!

Y’all are in for a treat! I was selected to host a giveaway with an online printing company, UPrinting. When I discovered UPrinting I was so excited! I’m totally addicted to buying new stationary and little cards so I am totally loving this company.

Also, if you are ‘green’ in your home or office, they offer all kinds of printing options that are super eco-friendly like different paper and printing options (i.e. recycled paper and soy/vegetable based ink).

Their prices are great, turnaround time is fast on orders, and they always have promotions going on! Also, they offer FREE proofs! How awesome is that?! I just can’t say enough good things about this company!

So far we have had a WONDERFUL weekend. Hope you are having a great weekend too!

Rory’s nature walk and craft

Today was gorgeous and chilly. FINALLY. After such a brutally hot summer, it was so refreshing to take in this little cool snap we are having.

This morning a friend of mine around the corner, Roxanne, came and got Rory for a playdate with her son, Samuel. She didn’t ask me, she just said, “Ok I’m coming to get Rory tomorrow morning”. She knew I’d never ask, and I am just so thankful for friends like her. And I have some awesome friends just like that in Paris.

After Rory’s nap we went outside to play! While we were outside we took a “nature walk” around our backyard and collected leaves and sticks. She thought this was so much fun! Then we came inside and made a nature collage.

It was a wonderful day!

at least its a cute fake smile…

Only TWO MORE DAYS to enter the giveaway! CLICK HERE to go to that post and enter!

stinker update and a GIVEAWAY!

So last night was interesting.

Actually let me go back a couple of weeks. Rory and I ran into the Krogers to get a couple of snacks for her and some juice. I was looking at the fruit snacks and turn around to find little miss Rory naked as a jaybird! Like NO CLOTHES on aisle 5. It was embarrassing. And it happened in like two seconds… I still don’t know how/why.

Back to last night. We went to Tamales (which by the way is the only place to take two under two because it is so loud and no one can hear your kid screaming and gnashing her teeth because of the fact she has to sit). Well we were just eatin’ our dinner and Rory was chowing on some guacamole and talking in her usual manner…. then all of a sudden guacamole is off the fork and on the lady behind us. Oh dear.

So that was fun. I’m just glad it wasn’t a bratty move and that she didn’t mean to. (Or maybe it was and just covered up REALLY well…???)

Then we went to the Home Depots for some supplies for Andy’s new trailer for his new four-wheeler.

Low and behold we are standing in the check out line when all of a sudden I hear the cashier say, “honey, your girl has done lost her britches”. And I’ll be darn if Rory wasn’t diaper-less and bending over to moon the whole store. We probably won’t be welcomed back anytime soon. She also had her squeaky boots on and I’m pretty sure people were annoyed.

So there you have it. Stinker Update- Rory just wants to be nekkid.

And now for an awesome GIVEAWAY!!!!!!!!

My friend Amanda, from both Starkville and Alexandria, has started a embroidery and sewing business called Stitched. She asked me this week if I’d want to do a giveaway and of course I did! I love everything she makes!

Amanda taught school for five years, but last spring decided to stay home with kiddos. She bought an embroidery machine and began “Stitched.” Amanda does custom embroidery, monogramming, and applique. She’s done lots of birthday shirts, school shirts, and holiday shirts. She loves to take other people’s ideas and create a custom look!

(And let me just add that her and her husband Clint took a huge leap of faith and decided to be foster parents this past year. They already have two kids Jack and Sydney Kay who are PRECIOUS. By supporting her home business you make it easier for them to follow their calling as foster parents! Her goal is to have 80 orders for Christmas and I would LOVE if we could help her get even more!)

So who wants to win a custom Christmas shirt FOR FREE?!!!!!!!!!!!

HERE ARE THE RULES: Comment on this blog post and GO TO STITCHED. ON FACEBOOK BY CLICKING HERE and LIKE HER PAGE. That will automatically enter you to win a custom shirt!

FOR A SECOND CHANCE TO WIN, comment on the picture of your favorite shirt on Amanda’s page (Stitched.) and that will give you another entry to win! (You may comment on multiple shirts but only one comment will count as a second entry.)

Okay do you get it?! Any questions please ask. The giveaway will last through next Friday at 5:00 PM CST. I will choose a winner by a random number generator and announce the winner either Friday night or Saturday morning (have you read about my life lately? I can’t promise anything more than broad time frames, ha!).

Okay I realize this post is too long already but hello! Stinker Update #2!

This is what happens when Momma blogs:

Oh dear. I must go love on poor Jackson now. I heard her say “I color” but didn’t realize that meant the dog and herself with a sharpie.

Have a great weekend!

Tuesday Tutorial and a Giveaway!

As everyone who knows me knows, I am really good at coming up with ideas and really not so great at following through or recreating my ideas.

BUT! I finally did it!

I was sitting in the living room the other night and decided to try out a wreath. And it actually worked!

Are you ready to learn how to make this?

What you will need:

  • Fabric of your color choice. (I got a yard of each and it has made three wreaths worth and I still have some left!)
  • Hot glue gun and LOTS OF STICKS
  • yarn in whatever color you prefer
  • felt squares
  • wreath in the size you desire

Step one: Prep work! Turn hot glue gun on so its extremely hot once you are ready to start. Cut different size strips out of your fabric. Also, cut different size squares out of the felt. If you do the prep work before, it will be much easier and faster.

Step two: Making the rosettes.

  1. Put a pool of glue in the center of the felt square.
  2. Place end of fabric strip onto the glue. (Get burned.) Hold down until secure. Then start to twist the strip of fabric.
  3. Put glue in a circle around the fabric already glued down onto felt square. Take your twisted fabric strip and place on glue circulating the middle piece of fabric. (Probably get burned again.)
  4. Continue to twist the fabric strip, put glue down, and lay down twisted fabric until the strip runs out. Leave a small piece of fabric hanging at the end. (More than likely get burned 12o49 times- give or take seven or so.)
  5. Once you are out of fabric, cut away the extra felt around the rosette.
  6. Glue the remaining piece to the back of the rosette to secure it and VOILA! you have done the hardest part! (PS you will definitely burn yourself on this part.)
  7. Once you have the desired amount of rosettes made, arrange them however you want them to go onto the wreath. I am majorly OCD so it takes me forever to figure out exactly how I want it.
  8. Once you have your pattern, glue all the rosettes together. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of this part. Sorry. (And I assure you that your fingers will be burned- but at least its for the last time during this tutorial!)

Step Three: Finish the wreath.

  1. Take the yarn and wrap it around your wreath. I weaved mine into the wreath as well to make it secure.
  2. Take your rosettes that are glued securely together (and dried). Place them wherever you want them on the wreath. Again, OCD kicks in for me so it takes forever. Then glue it onto the wreath. I also weaved some yarn through them and hid it to make it more secure. Use a generous amount of glue and that sucker will stay! And there you have it- you have made the wreath!

Now for the fun, less painful part (due to all the burnings)- I’m giving a wreath away! All you have to do is comment ON THIS POST ONLY and on Friday I will select a winner through a random number generator! US residents only, please. It will be smaller than this wreath by a little only so I can ship it cheaper and easier.

And for all you suckers who don’t win and don’t want to get burned 20395 times- I’m selling these wreaths! $15-$25 depending on which size you get and how many rosettes you want. Email me if you want one – tiffany@theharrislife.com !

Can’t wait to see who wins!

(This giveaway is sponsored by me and only me. I have not been compensated or asked to do a giveaway by anyone. I just love my readers and wanted to give something to y’all!)
